The Irwin Mountain Lodge is a partially existing structure that rises out of an embankment at 10,700 feet elevation overlooking the Elk Mountain Wilderness. The Lodge design and program setting is based on summer and winter uses. The Lodge will accommodate 28 rooms, a large Grand Hall with rooms overlooking from the second floor, a conference center, dining and yoga. A new Energy Barn wil be constructed with bar/restaurant, office, medical, mechanical rooms and garage space for 3 snow cats. The Energy Barn will be in close proximity of the Lodge and will create an exterior courtyard effect with the new and existing buildings. Several of the existing out buildings will receive new face lifts to coordinate with the new construction of the Lodge and the Energy Barn.
Several goals were attained for the existing lodge which was to give it a cohesive Rustic aesthetic for the interior and exterior. Increase natural light into the lodge-this will be alleviated with larger windows and doors to replace the existing smaller windows, and dormers will dominate the entire length of the roof line. The dormers will provide natural light, views and extra space for the third level. The second and third level will be gutted and new suites will be designed for this level. A sense of integration with the site with materials will be a high priority, stone from the site will be used, and photovoltaics, ground source heat pumps, and possibly sterling engines will be used to supplement the energy needs of this structure.
